The rise in cosmeceuticals continues as more companies try to cash in on on the ongoing consumer demand for multi-tasking makeup products. Tarte recently introduced its Inside Out lipgloss — a product that not only serves as ordinary lipgloss, but also delivers a dose of vitamins with each application.
I can understand a lipgloss packed with vitamins. Using antioxidants in cosmetics have been around for years. But a lipgloss that helps you lose weight? Omega Tech Labs claims that its Promise Lipgloss has — in a way — accomplished this odd feat. By including essential oils and natural ingredients such as orange, grapefruit, ginger and Vitamin E, this product will supposedly help curb your appetite and eliminate cravings for sweets. The instructions for the product state that the product is safe and can be applied liberally to the lips. The company goes on further to explain:
An immediate trans-dermal (skin) rush to the bloodstream puts the product to work immediately. Secondarily, the olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) senses are assaulted with the net result being highly efficacious.
Omega Tech Labs is careful to state that the product is “not intended to be positioned as a ‘diet’ or ‘weight-loss’ product”, but rather a product that is used to “‘help’ curb the appetite.” The company also made sure to add: “Even though there have been reports of weight loss as a direct result of using Promise, we are not claiming that this is a ‘diet’ or ‘weight-loss’ product.” Translation? This is an untested product that probably doesn’t do what it half-heartedly claims it will do.
I’m deeply skeptical about whether Promise works and, even if it did, whether I would want my senses of taste and smell “assaulted” by my lipgloss. It will be really interesting to hear whether this actually works for anyone. If you’ve tried it, be sure to let me know!
