Save the Earth, Buy More Lipstick

Cosmetics are going green…and I’m not just talking about this spring’s newest eyeshadows.

Keeping up with the growing social concern for curbing global warming and preserving the environment, Cargo Cosmetics recently launched its Plantlove line, a collection of “botanically formulated” cosmetics. At the center of the collection is the buzzworthy PlantLove Botanical Lipstick ($20, Beauty.com), which the cosmetic company formulated using good-for-you ingredients like meadowfoam seed oil, jojoba, and shea butter instead of commonly used, and potentially unhealthy, ingredients like mineral oil and petrolatum

The lipstick comes in a biodegradable tube that is made out of polylactic acid, which is an earth-friendly substance derived from corn. As if this wasn’t thoughtful enough, the product’s box is even made out of “flower paper”, a type of biodegradable cardboard embedded with flower seeds. Simply moisten the box, plant it, and wait for your flowers to grow!

Cargo has also stated that it believes that the future of the planet depends not only on an investment in the earth, but also on an investment in our children and has agreed to donate two dollars from the sale of every PlantLove lipstick to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Also marking the trend towards creating more environmentally conscious cosmetics, renowned fashion designer Stella McCartney recently launched “Care”, which is a certified organic skincare line that officially fuses the ethics and benefits of natural ingredients with the high standard of luxury expected from prestige skin products.

One of the bestsellers from this line is the Gentle Cleansing Milk, a face cleanser that uses sesame seed oil, Vitamins E and A, and lemon balm extract to soothe and comfort skin while removing makeup and facial impurities. Other notable products include a floral skin toner that revitalizes skin with antixodiant green tea as well as a range of moisturizers and serums that use organic extracts to fight the signs of aging. The Care skincare line is available from Sephora.

With environmentally conscious products like these (and surely more on the way), going green is suddenly looking a lot more hip rather than hippie.
