Maybelline Define-a-Lash Mascara Review
Maybelline Define-a-Lash Mascara has sexy packaging and an excellent brush. Too bad the actual product is pretty average.
Maybelline markets the newest member of its family of mascaras as a “lengthening zero clump mascara” that guarantees to be clump-free through use of a “built-in-wiper.”
Furthermore, Mabelline also touts its specially shaped brush as one that will elongate, accentuate, and perfectly define lashes.
So does Maybelline Define-a-Lash Mascara work?
The part about being clump-free is true. Define-a-Lash includes a very nice rubber-bristled applicator brush that’s contoured to hug your lashes and allow you to easily apply mascara right at the roots of your lashes — all while keeping dreaded clumps at bay.
Unfortunately, what accolades this mascara gains in being clump-free, is lost by virtue of the fact that it doesn’t add exceptional length or thickness and it tends to uncurl the lashes.
While the curling problem might be remedied when the waterproof version of Define-a-Lash comes out, I’m not thrilled with this product and I still think that if you’re looking for a good, smear-proof (but not waterproof), drugstore mascara, you’re better off with something like Max Factor Lash Lift.

Hi! Thanks for sharing your opinion!

I also really like this mascara. I am a contact lens wearer so I can’t do many of the “fibers” mascaras and I find this to be a great substitute when I don’t feel like paying $23 for definicils (lancome) my all time favorite. I thought it did an excellent job of making my lashes well defined and seperated without clumping, and it does not irritate my eyes like all covergirl products seem to.

Hi I just tried Maybelline Define-a-Lash Mascara I wasn’t crazy about it . when first applied it didn’t reach the little hairs on the end. so I reapplied but to my surprise it clumped up. By my one eye did come out really great I think it gave my eye lash more length and fullness. but just don’t reapply take it off then try it again.

Hi Jen and Marissa! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences with this mascara!
I have the volumizing version of this mascara (in the pink tube) that I’ve been meaning to try out. I’m hoping I’ll like it better than the original!

Personally, I feel like my eight dollars was completely wasted by this mascara. It took too long to dry, clumped horrendously, smeared, and in a word was terrible.

Hello, ladies. Let me tell you, I am not a mascara wearer at all, always was big on eye pencils, but wanted a good waterproof mascara that I could wear to water-parks, so have tried several, and must admit define-a-lash waterproof is nice, gives lashes a little lift and thickens them up, also liked the fact that after it dried didn’t smear at all and seems to be pretty flake free, and doesn’t feel as stiff as great lash waterproof by maybelline. If you are looking for Omph!!!! mascara it is not that but overall it’s alright, so far haven’t found one that was perfect in all senses even the more expensive ones like clinique, which flakes horribly, or definciles by lancome was just all right, but nothing spectacular.
Otherwise this one is pretty good.

Hi Brianna and Elena, thanks so much for sharing your opinions on this mascara.
Brianna, I agree with you. I’m not a big fan of this mascara.
Elena, from what you described, it sounds like the waterproof version is a big improvement over the original! I’ll have to give it a try ; )

I just tried this mascara and really liked the coverage. Wasn’t clumpy and it really made my lashes look longer. I didn’t put on the eyeliner and felt that the mascara did a great job with highlighting my lashes. I am used to Clinique’s mascara and have been looking for something cheaper for about 5 years now (so far nothing has compared) . After 2 days of use, I can say that I like it almost as much and will continue to use it in place of the clinique.

Hi becca! Wow! I think that it’s great that you’ve found a mascara that you really like (and that saves you some money ; ) Which Clinique mascara is your favorite?
11 Becca // Feb 25, 2008 at 10:49 am
It was the high impact mascara that comes in a dark green tube. I really love this Maybelline’s mascara - but still trying to find out if Maybelline /Loreal test on animals. Once I know for sure I may be switching back to Clinique (which does not test on animals).
12 Jazmin // Feb 25, 2008 at 11:33 am
I’ve heard good things about that mascara, but I haven’t tried it!
I saw your comment on the Maybelline minerals post and I’m going to try to get more information on the animal testing issue.
I know that L’Oreal still tests its products/ingredients on animals. At one point, however, Maybelline submitted a statement to Peta confirming that it did not test on animals. But as you’ve already found, Peta’s Do/Don’t Test lists don’t reflect this. Hopefully we’ll get this figured out!
13 Becca // Feb 25, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Thank you for helping me figure this out - I am also researching what I can and will let you know if I find out anything definite- the Peta’s list still has Maybelline listed as testing so. I highly recommend that Clinique high impact mascara. For me, nothing came close to it and I have been using it for 5 years, but….I honestly love this Maybelline mascara almost as much. For me, it is very close to Clinique. The closest of any drug store versions I have tried. Thanks again and will catch up soon hopefully fingers crossed that Maybelline does not test on animals.

I haven’t tried this one but I completely agree that due to the fact that they use microbrushes to avoid clumps and to seperate it give you MUCH less volume, and length too.
I may have to try this out, but I prefer to stick with Covergirl since the micro brush from Maybeline somewhat turned me off.
15 Jazmin // Feb 25, 2008 at 2:53 pm
Hi N.N.! Thanks for the comment!
When you say “microbrush”, are you referring to these rubber-bristled brushes? I actually like the one that came with Covergirl Lash Blast (though it’s anything but micro ; )
I still have the volumizing version of Define-a-Lash sitting around here that I’ve yet to try. I’ll have to test it out and see if it’s any better ; )
16 Jazmin // Feb 25, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Becca,
Sorry I almost missed your comment there!
And you’re very welcome! It will be interesting to get this whole animal-testing thing straightened out. I’ll definitely keep you updated ; )
17 Becca // Feb 26, 2008 at 6:26 am
I wrote to Maybelline directly and asked this:
I am getting conflicting reports as to whether you test your products on animals. I saw under caringconsumer.com (Peta’s website) that you do test your products on animals. I have seen your company listed under Garnier and also L’Oreal that do test on animals. Can you please clear up this confusion for me as I recently tried your mineral makeup (which I LOVE), but can’t continue to use until I know where your company stands on animal testing. Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond to my comment.
Will let you know what I find out!!!
18 Jazmin // Feb 26, 2008 at 4:57 pm
Way to go, Becca! I hope they give you a good answer.
I was supposed to speak with someone from PETA today, but things have been so crazy that I wasn’t able to call her back. I’ll definitely keep you updated if I find out what’s going on. And, if I get a good answer, I’ll write a whole separate post on it ; )
19 becca // Feb 26, 2008 at 5:20 pm
Thanks so much - we will figure this out together :) Thanks for following up too!!! So glad that this is important to you too!
20 Jazmin // Feb 26, 2008 at 5:31 pm
You’re welcome! And thank you, too!
I think a lot of makeup moxies are increasingly more concerned with the issue of animal testing, so I think it’s important that we address it : )

I just want everyone to know;
this product sucks a**.
i paid for it, it doesnt work.

Kayla,
That’s brutal! But thanks for sharing your opinion ; )

I like Maybelline products but was concerned about whether they tested on animals. Sad to say, they do. I found the answer on this site
http://www.lorealparisusa.com/_us/_en/default.aspx#page=top{nav|media:_blank|overlay:faq|diagnostic|main:beautyfilter//sort+none;swatch+false;category+AXE//|userdata//d+d//}

The page does not open if you click on the link. Either go to FAQ on L’Oreal site, where they have admitted that they do need to test their new products on animals. Or maybe you need to copy and paste the whole link ( in my last comment).
25 Jazmin // May 13, 2008 at 10:49 pm
Hi there,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your comment!
I think this is the link, you were looking at: Loreal FAQ’s
And you click on the “Does L’Oreal test on animals?” link to read their statement.
And, actually, I think (though I’m not totally sure on this one), that this is a pretty standard policy on animal-testing. Though their finished products aren’t tested on animals, some of their ingredients still are.

hi! i love this product. It makes me look like I’m wearing falsies :) it’s wonderful, on the other hand I hate the pink and green tube mascara (i think it’s great lash) that everyone raves about. I swear it adds an inch :)
27 Jazmin // May 16, 2008 at 5:35 am
Hi there, Saira! Wow, an inch for you?? I think I’ll have to revisit this mascara and give it another try ;)
Thanks for sharing your opinion!

I have used this mascara and I actually liked it.. It has a small brush, which I like, so it was great! I am using the waterproof right now and I enjoy it more than the original though. I give it 4 stars.. =)

I was never really big on mascara, since I have long, thick eyelashes anyway and mascara just tended to go on really thick and make me look scary! However, I tried this mascara a few months ago and it is my all-time favourite. I will never use another as long as I can find this. It’s light enough to wear everyday when all I want is to make the light tips of my lashes darker. I can go running and it doesn’t run from all the sweat. However, as soon as I want it to come off, it comes off with only warm water. Fab stuff! The brush is also ridiculously easy to clean. : )
31 Jazmin // Aug 18, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Hi ladies! Sorry for my delay in responding!
But I’m glad to hear that you’re all loving your Define-a-Lash! Thanks so much for commenting and leaving your opinions of it ; )

If you train yourself on how to use the brush properly, this mascara is magic in a tube.
It thickened, lengthened, and lifted my eyelashes! :)It can keep a curl, but not that well.
The formula is more creamy and natural, so it takes a while to dry…but it’s worth it because
it barely clumps, and it seriously just REFUSES to flake.
It’s also the favorite of a famous beauty tuber, X Marcage or something like that. I’m sorry I don’t remember but yeah she raves about it.
This mascara is defenantly worth it’s price. :)

I really like the Define a Lash waterproof mascara, and have bought it a few times. It seems to be an improvement over some of the other random lines that Maybelline comes out with. I recently tried the Collossal Volume and it made my tear ducts burn by the end of the day. I don’t know what that really means but I’m definitely not wearing it again. I think though that Too Faced Lash Injection will be my next mascara purchase as my trials with it have exceeded the define-a-lash bar. The only thing I can complain about this mascara though is when the bottle is getting finished, the mascara gets really stiff and hard to apply. Otherwise I really like it!

Well! I just bought this mascara yesterday along with the maybelline define a line eyeliner. I have to say that this mascara is great. I have really small and thin eyelashes and after I applied like a million coats on my eyelashes they looked super long, and clump free! Not to forget the fact that I didn’t even have to curl my lashes the mascara did it ALL!
