Laura Geller Spackle Trio Primer Set Review

PHOTO: Laura Geller on Sephora.com

The Laura Geller Spackle Trio combines primers for the face, lips, and eyes in one attractive little jar that comes complete with its own flip-top mirror.

Eye Spackle Eye Primer. Probably the strongest product out of the three, just a little bit of Eye Spackle blended onto your eyelids goes a long way in helping eyeshadow go on smoother and last longer.

You may have to adjust the amount of eyeshadow you use while wearing Eye Spackle because this primer makes eyeshadow color look truer to the shade in its container and, as a result, eyeshadow can appear more intense than it would normally.

Lip Spackle is also an effective primer and it really helped my lipstick look smooth, stay in place, and last longer. While it does prep the lips for smooth lipstick application, it’s a little bit drying and tends to cause lips to become flakey when you first apply the primer.

Avoid this problem by exfoliating your lips using a product like Tarte FRxtion or by making your own homemade lip scrub.

Spackle Under Makeup Face Primer is a light, dimethicone-based primer that you apply as a base before applying your regular foundation. While this primer helps skin appear smoother and makeup last longer, it lacks the more dramatic perfecting power of other primers and it does little to control oil.

Laura Geller Spackle Trio is great if you’re going to use all three primers and you’re looking to minimize the number of products you have floating around in your makeup bag.

While I’d definitely buy the high-performing Eye Spackle eye primer on its own, I’d pass on buying all three together…mostly for personal reasons. I don’t have that much use for the Lip Spackle, since I don’t wear lipstick too often (and Lip Spackle causes lipglosses and sheer lipsticks to become a little muddy) and I generally look for more heavy-duty oil-control and pore-camouflaging power from my face primers.

These are all solid products, however, and your personal taste and needs will largely dictate whether Laura Geller Spackle Trio is a winner for you.

Laura Geller Spackle Trio is available for $30 from Sephora.

So has anyone tried Laura Geller Face, Eye, or Lip Spackle? What are your thoughts on it?

Thanks for the great review! I had been thinking about trying out the face primer, but I will likely just get the eye primer when I run out of my Urban Decay Primer Potion.

Hi Christine. You’re welcome! I love Urban Decay’s Primer Potion. It has been a long time since I used it, but I remember that Primer Potion was easier to apply than Eye Spackle since it’s more of a liquid.

Please let me know what you think of the Eye Spackle once you try it!

I love the Laura Geller Spackle for the face, especially the airless pump! in the summer i mix spackle with my everydayminerals for a clean everyday face with no redness. in the winter I use spackle over my moisturizer, and then minerals. Never tried eye or lip spackle, and loooove urban decay primer potion, even use it under my concealer for more staying power.

Hi Rosie, thanks for the great tips! I’m definitely going to give them a try!

I am always looking for products that will help my eyemakeup stay on my very oily eyelids…this will be a must try next time I’m at the makeup counter!

    Hi sarahanne,

You should love your oily eyelids…supposedly they’ll help keep wrinkles at bay longer! (at least that’s what I tell myself ;)

i love it, great for travel!

  • 8 Jazmin, MakeupMoxie.com // Aug 2, 2007 at 1:52 pm

Hey Vanessa! At first I thought this might be a little bulky to be ideal for travel (especially if you’re not going to use all three primers).

But I just realized that one of the cool things about this product is that it meets airline requirements.

Great point, thanks for the comment!

    Hi Jazmin,
I’ve only used L’Oreal’s Eye primer from the HIP line. That product makes my eyelids feel sticky and eyeliner and shadow don’t apply easily on top of it. Does Eye Spackle have the same effect or is it easy to apply your eye shadow or liner on top of it?

  • 10 Jazmin, MakeupMoxie.com // Aug 9, 2007 at 1:23 am

Hey Jennifer! Are you talking about the L’Oreal De-crease eye shadow base? (which I’m not a big fan of, I thought it didn’t blend on smoothly).

I didn’t find the Eye Spackle to be sticky. When it’s straight out of the container, it feels kind of like those super-thick cream concealers (like Dermablend).

But then if you blend it well, it dries to a smooth finish and makes eyeshadow (even the cheapie stuff) and liner go on smoothly.

  • 11 Jennifer // Sep 3, 2007 at 9:51 am

Well I tried the Eye Spackle and both times my makeup had creased and faded by the end of the day. I loved that it made my makeup with go on smoothly but that’s about the only thing I liked since it didn’t work well for me. It might have to do with my eyelids being oily. So it looks like I am back on the market for a good eye primer and will continue to use the L’Oreal one I have since that does make my makeup last all day.

Hi, thanks for the review. I was thinking of buying the face spackle because I was looking for the primer and frankly, the name ’spackle” made me laugh. Yes, that’s essentially what I want. I use Mac liquid foundation which so far has the least “settling” problem that I’ve found. I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t want to use any kind of powder on my face because it settles too much, makes my pores look huge and the few expression lines I have look worse. In your review you mentioned that other face primers have more dramatic effects. Could you name names. Also do you see any point in matching the brand of foundation to the primer? I.e. if I’m using MAC foundation, use MAC primer as well?

    Thanks for your help.

  • 13 Jazmin // Jan 2, 2008 at 5:46 pm

    Hi Jenny,

You’re so welcome! And I love your comments!

lol, I think “spackle” is a funny name, too…and a clever one!

Oooh, and you want me to name names? Let’s see…I think Smashbox Photo Finish is a classic with a well-deserved reputation when it comes to smoothing over skin perfections. I’ve tried it in its original formula and it’s formula with the anti-aging ingredient, Dermaxl. Both worked great, but I suspect that the “light” version will work even better for me, since I have oily skin.

I also really like BECCA mattifying primer, Cosmedicine Medi-Matte. and Sue Devitt Microquatic Fortifying Primer…they all do an excellent job of absorbing oil and smoothing over imperfections.

As for matching brands…I generally don’t see too much of a point of matching brands of any kind of makeup because different people are going to have different needs at different times and it’s unlikely that any one brand or product can cover all those needs.

I haven’t tried a MAC primer yet, so, unfortunately, I can’t give you much info on it right now. But if you end up trying it out, please be sure to stop back and let us know what you think!

I am desperately seeking a new eye primer. i have greasy eye lids and have been using primer and i’m still having problems with eye liner transfer. i’ve been using M.A.C. fluidline eye liner and i love it, but it’s been ending up at the top of my eye lid. blah.
i started out using Mary Kay which was alright, but i’ve also used clinique, M.A.C. and urban decay. I had great results the last time i used urban decay, and this is what i’m currently using, but right now, it’s not really that effective. there isn’t any creasing, but the eye liner transfer drives me crazy. i’m wondering if using model in a bottle might help, i’ve never used it but always wanted to try. any ideas on a good eye primer?

  • 15 Jazmin // Jan 11, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Hi Amanda! Thanks so much for the question!

Hmm…I haven’t tried MAC fluidline, so I can’t vouch for how well it wears. However, I’m suspecting that your smudging problem may have to do more with the liner than with your primer or maybe with your eye cream (if you wear it).

Here are a couple tips that might help:

    1. Other primers you might like to try is the Laura Geller Eye Spackle that I reviewed above. Another favorite of Makeup Moxies like SarahPuffy is Benefit She Laq.

    2. Or you can try a different liner. I think Maybelline’s Line Stylist Waterproof liquid liner does a great job of staying in place. I’ve also been using MAC’S Kohl Power eye pencil, which has great staying power.

    3. When you’re done applying your eyeshadow and liner, dust your eyelids with a loose face powder. The powder will work to preserve your makeup longer and control the excess oil that may be causing your eyeliner problems.

    4. Similarly, using an eye cream before applying your makeup may also be causing your liner to go astray. Try skipping the eye cream or at least switching off to a less oily eye gel (I like Boots No7 Eye Reviving Gel).

Hope that helps! Please be sure to let me know how it goes. If any of you Makeup Moxies have more tips for Amanda, please feel free to leave a comment!

Well i don’t use eye cream and i would agree with you about the eye liner, except that it’s only on the on left eye. I think i’ll have to try the eye spackle and the benefit. i’ve been happy with their products. now if i could only find something good for those pesky unwanted facials hairs. any ideas?

  • 17 Jazmin // Jan 13, 2008 at 12:35 pm

    Hi Amanda!

Be sure to try setting your makeup with powder, too. It just might do the trick :) But if you try these other primers, be sure to let me know how it goes!

Oh, and those “pesky unwanted facial hairs”…we all hate ‘em, don’t we?

While I could write a whole story on it (and I should now that you’ve asked the question ;), you’ve got quite a few options…waxing, depilatories, and tweezing are all popular and can be done either at a salon or at home.

If you try those options and they don’t work too well for you, it’s time to visit the doctor and maybe look into the new prescription face cream that controls hair growth (the name escapes me at the moment, so Ill have to get back to you on that) or laser treatments.

    Hope that helps!

What about Bare Escentuals bareVitamins Prime Time or Bare Escentuals bareVitamins Prime Time Eyelid Primer?
    Any idea?

  • 19 amanda // Jan 16, 2008 at 9:35 pm

So it turns out it wasn’t the eyeliner, it was the mascara. it was loreal hip, i tried a day without eyeliner and i still got the transfer and then i tried a day with a different mascara and no transfer

  • 20 Jazmin // Jan 16, 2008 at 9:46 pm

Hi Mona! Thanks for the question! I’ve only used Prime Time a couple of times, but I like it! I think it’s comparable to Tarte Clean Slate. As for the Prime Time Eye Primer, I haven’t tried it. Has anyone here tried Bare Escentuals’ eye primer? Please feel free to leave your feedback!

Amanda: Yay! Glad you got your eye makeup mystery all figured out! Which Loreal mascara was it?

  • 21 Jazmin // Jan 16, 2008 at 9:47 pm

Oh, sorry, I missed that you said it was the one from the Loreal Hip line! At least now we know that that’s a mascara that doesn’t stay in place for you like it should!

  • 25 brenda // Apr 29, 2008 at 10:30 am

well i just got the face primer, my face is dry well i would like to say extra crispy so i think this will work fine.. but lets c if it makes my makeup last because normally my makeup fades so so so fast… ohh and i luv the urban decay eye primer!! best best.. ohh i have never tried any other primers….

  • 27 DeLois // May 9, 2008 at 9:03 am

The best eyeliner in the world is by Shu Umera, they have a liquid liner that last forever, my eye lids are terribly oily and this works even when I am working out. Another good liner is by Make up forever it is the only one in pencil form that has ever lasted. As far as my eye shadow, I have used everything and it still creases.

  • 28 Jazmin // May 13, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Sorry for the delay in returning your comments, ladies!

Brenda, how’s this primer working out for you? And I agree, UDPP is exceptional (and I’ve tried a lot of eye primers ; )

DeLois, thanks for the liquid liner recommendations! And I agree that most eyeshadows will, ultimately, crease…the trick is finding one that will crease less than others ; ) I like the eyeshadows by Dior, Too-Faced, and recently I’ve been wearing Fresh, which are really nice. Do you wear an eye primer? I think that’s pretty much the key to making your eyeshadow last ; )
