Milani Minerals Loose Makeup is another nice foundation that suffers from terrible packaging. Fortunately for Milani, its pleasing price tag helps make up for its container’s shortcomings.
What I like about Milani Mineral Makeup:
- Nice Finish. Milani Mineral Loose Makeup offers buildable coverage. You can either blend on a small amount to even out skin tone or you can buff on more foundation to achieve better coverage and further minimize skin imperfections. Either way, your skin looks, for the most part, fresh and natural.
- Slightly Better-Than-Average Shade Range. With eight sheer-but-buildable shades, Milani Minerals offers the most extensive and wearable range of colors out of all the drugstore mineral foundations.
- Good Value. Milani Minerals makeup retails for only $8 for a 0.35 ounce container. Though I ended up using about twice the amount of this makeup to get a result similar to the one I would get with bareMinerals, the price is low enough that you’ll still end up saving money if you choose Milani Minerals over a more expensive brand. If you use about twice the amount of Milani Minerals as you would bareMinerals, the final cost is only about $14 (versus the $25 for the equivalent amount needed of bareMinerals).
What I don’t like about Milani Minerals Loose Makeup:
- Extra Blending Required and a Little Caking Possible. Unlike Jane Be Pure Minerals and Almay Pure Blends, Milani Minerals is not quite as finely milled. The result is a need to spend some extra time buffing and blending the product onto the skin. Also, if you opt for extra coverage, the product might get just a tad cakey after a couple hours of wear. It’s not a deal-killer, but it highlights the difference between this and a higher quality mineral makeup.
- The Most Ridiculous Container I’ve Ever Come Across. The scratchy, unusable brush attached to the inside of the container’s pointy screw-on lid almost completely blocks the mineral powder from coming out through the container’s sifter. In order to use this product, I had to take off the silly, elfin-looking cover (with its offending attached brush) and tap the minerals into the lid of an extra sifter jar that I had on hand. Really annoying.
The Bottom Line on Milani Minerals Loose Makeup: Once you get past the inane packaging, Milani Minerals is actually a decent product for a decent price.
Milani Minerals Loose Makeup is available for $8 from Walgreens.
Has anyone tried Milani Minerals Loose Makeup? What do you think of it?

I bought Milani Minerals Loose Makeup over a month ago and I’m still using the same container! It just seems to last so much longer than your traditional foundation. I do agree with you though.. This does have the most ridiculous brush and is in the dumbest container! However, it does cover nice for it’s price.

Hi Lizzy!
Thanks so much for sharing your experience…I’m so glad you found something that works for you!
And just out of curiosity, what did you decide to do about the silly container?
I’ve got mine in an old BareMinerals container ; )

I’ve been using Bare Escentuals bareMinerals but would love to find a less expensive alternative. Any idea what shade of the Milani Mineral Loose Makeup would be comparable to Medium Beige Bare Escentuals?
4 Jazmin // Jan 2, 2008 at 4:07 pm
Hi CynB! Thanks so much for the question!
My (rough) guess would be the Milani Mineral Loose Makeup in “True Beige” or “Honey Beige”. Those should at least be a good starting place for you. Just be sure to purchase it from Walgreens or CVS and be sure to save your receipt just in case you have to take it back and try a different shade.
Good luck! Be sure to stop back and let us know how it goes!

I appreciate your help! I’ll give one/both of the Milani shades a try.
By the way, I’m new to this site and I think it’s great…I’m sure that I’ll be a regular visitor :-)
Happy 2008!

I am a senior lady that has been away from makeup for sometime because of sensitive skin. After reading reviews on Minerals foundation I decided to try Milani minerals and must say I do like it, however, I do not care for the brush. Can someone please recommend a better brush for this product?
8 Jazmin // Jan 14, 2008 at 10:56 pm
Hello Barbara! Thank you so much for your question!
I’m so glad that you’ve found a good mineral makeup that works for your skin type…but the brush is terrible! We’ll definitely have to get you a new one.
For makeup mineral application, I highly recommend investing in a high-quality brush that will last a long time. My long-time favorite is the Bare Escentuals “Flawless Application” Face Brush ($22 at Sephora).
If you’d like a more budget-friendly option and you have a CVS drugstore nearby, be sure to check out the “Essence of Beauty” brushes. For mineral makeup application, the ones that I think would work particularly well are the finishing face brush ($7.99), the Pure Powder Face Brush ($9.99), and the Kabuki Brush (best if you want fuller coverage and available for $9.99).
I hope that helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions about it : )

Hi Jazmin.
I finally purchased Milani Mineral Loose Makeup in “True Beige”. I’m very pleased with it…the shade is a good match for me and the performance is quite nice especially considering that I only paid $3.99 for it at Ulta! :-)
Take care.

Hi CynB,
Great to hear from you again! And I’m so glad that you finally got ahold of your Milani Minerals…and that it works for you!!
And way to go on the killer deal! I don’t think it gets any better than that ; )

Hi..right now im using sheercover and its really good but its cakey and and it dries my skin..I wanna try this Milani Loose powder.Im currently using the Latte/Buff shade in sheercover, what do u think the comparable shade if buy the milani loose powder??
14 Jazmin // Feb 12, 2008 at 1:34 pm
Hi Charmz,
Thanks for the question! Since I haven’t tested all the shades available from Sheercover, I unfortunately can’t give you a very accurate guess on which shade of Milani to buy.
My best advice would be to go check out the Milani foundation in person and choose a shade that looks the closest to the one you’re currently using. Just be absolutely sure that you buy your foundation from a drugstore that will allow you to return/exchange the product if it’s the wrong color for you.
I hope that helps! Good luck!

hi, i was wondering if Milani loose makeup will clog pores at all. i’ve been having problems with acne when i put on foundation– although i have not yet tried a mineral makeup. i have oily-combo type skin.
16 Jazmin // Feb 13, 2008 at 3:34 pm
Hi Lucy! Thanks so much for the comment.
Milani mineral makeup isn’t as likely to clog pores since it’s an oil-free, powder-based foundation.
It does, however, contain Bismuth Oxychloride, which in rare cases has been known to cause acne.
Hope that helps!
17 Lizzy // Feb 13, 2008 at 9:57 pm
Hey Jazmin, sorry it took so long for me to respond! I actually tap my Milani Minerals Loose make-up powder into an old eye-shadow cover that popped off. I still use the brush it came with but after seeing your above post (re: best brush suitable for application) I think I’ll go ahead and buy one from CVS or Walgreens.
18 lucy // Feb 14, 2008 at 2:27 pm
okay i’ll try it and see how things turn out.
but overall it really sounds like a good product.
thank you soo much jazmin!!

Lizzy!! I’m so sorry I missed your comment, there! I think my eyes played tricks on me when I saw “Lizzy” and “lucy” on here! But I’m glad I spotted it : )
I love your eye-shadow-cover method, lol. I’ve also used the inner cover of a powder compact (the kind of compact that doesn’t have a mirror in it) and it worked well enough in a pinch : )
Please be sure to stop by and chat any time!!

Which is the better mineral drug store makeup: Revlon, Loreal, Milani, etc. I have used Loreal before and I just purchased Revlon. Because I tend to be oily in the summer, I am going to use a mineral style foundation as a primer then use the powder as a finisher. That way I can carry my powder with me if I need touch ups. Thanks for the heads up on the brushes at CVS.
22 Ashley // Mar 25, 2008 at 9:37 pm
I was wondering what other drug stores I would be able to find milani mineral loose makeup in because I do not really have a walgreens near me.
23 Jazmin // Mar 26, 2008 at 10:07 am
Wendy: You’re welcome! Since you said that you have oily skin, I would recommend Revlon or Milani. While Milani costs less, I did find that Revlon has better staying power. Hope that helps!
Ashley: You can also find Milani at CVS ; )
24 Jazmin // Mar 26, 2008 at 10:10 am
Oh, and I also spotted Milani online at Walgreens.com, CVS, and Best Beauty Online.
25 Brenda // Mar 30, 2008 at 3:45 pm
I just wanted to let everyone know Milani is awesome. I’ve used the expensive brands and was on a search to find something cheaper. I tried the compact Mineral Makeup and the coverage is awesome with no brush needed. I will never buy anything else.
26 Jazmin // Mar 31, 2008 at 3:56 pm
Hi Brenda, thanks for sharing your Milani love!

I can not tell you how happy I am to have found this site. I have been reading reviews since last night. ( well, I did get few hours sleep) I am in search of new mineral wear. I use the Colorstay liquid foundation but I would like something to go on top to give that nice “soft” look. I was hoping mineral wear powder would do that? I am 47 (eeekkks ) a bit of sun damage. oooooh go get that new Neutrogena healthy skin rejuvinator! But, I digress. Anyway I have tried L’Oreal ( yuck) I really didn’t like the Maybeline ( taking it back today ) PF (okay sort of ) My skin is a bit dry so I have to be careful. Nuetrogena ( Lord, they need to stick to face cleansing products ) Sigh…………Any suggestions? I still have the Almay, Jane and Milani I can try. This getting old stuff is for the birds (LOL) Thank you so much for this site.
Deb
28 Jazmin // Apr 16, 2008 at 9:52 am
LOL, Deb! I can just tell from your comment that you’d be a riot to go beauty shopping with (I’ll definitely have to try out that Neutrogena gizmo…I’ve also wanted to try out that “Wave” thing ; )
Ok, as for a “nice soft look” over your liquid foundation…I’m assuming you’re talking about achieving a soft, light-diffusing finish that will help blur over any fine lines and imperfections (as opposed to just adding heavier coverage).
Did I get that right? If that’s what you’re looking for, I’d recommend going with a lighter, non-drying finishing powder instead of a fuller-coverage mineral foundation. A good one to try that’s available from your drugstore is L’Oreal Hydra Perfecte loose powder.
If you still want to try one of the foundations that you listed, I think you’d probably like Almay Pure Blend the best. It’s higher quality than the other two, less drying, and it contains nice light-reflecting particles that can be flattering for “no-longer-20-something” skin ; )
And P.S. — I’m so happy that you found this site too! But as much as I love having you here, you better be getting your beauty sleep!! The site will always be here when you wake up ;)

Jazmin - I want to thank you for your helpful information on mineral foundations. I’m far from make-up savvy. I have severe acne, and I had been using Almay’s pressed powder foundation for oily skin. But it was very cakey at times, and tended to “melt” down my face after a few hours. I thought maybe a powder would be a better idea, and had heard that mineral make-up was better for acne. I had hoped to find an affordable mineral powder, though I’ve never used straight powder. I had no idea what I was looking for. I spent a few hours searching online for info and found your site most helpful! I picked up Milani that night, along with a Kabuki brush. But when I asked if the drugstore carried empty sifter jars, the assistant looked at me like I was crazy, then directed me to kitchen supplies (flour sifter :) ). I had seen them available online from the expensive mineral powder suppliers, but I’m not going to pay postage for one little jar. Any ideas? I’m not exactly sure what I’m looking for. Thanks again!
30 Jazmin // May 13, 2008 at 11:32 pm
Hi there! Sorry for the delay in getting back to you!
If you’re still shopping for a sifter jar, your best bet is a beauty supply store like Sally’s Beauty Supply. I think they’re around $4 for two.
I also just spotted this one from Sephora ($4) Hope that helps!

Once I am finished with my Almay (and New York Color) I plan to try this.
By the way, have you tried the New York Color mineral line? It’s not fantastic, but I’d love to know what you think! I can’t find a good review for it, and I compare everything before I buy.
32 Jazmin // May 15, 2008 at 8:23 pm
No, someone else had asked me about the NYC mineral makeup and I still haven’t tried it. Thanks so much for reminding me! I’ll definitely pick up some and review it ; )
33 Ecinay // May 20, 2008 at 6:36 am
Hey everyone.
Jazmin I love your site! I am a drugstore makeup addict LOL. And your site makes it so much easier to go in the store and find what you really want. Anyways I was looking for a more affordable options to mineral make up. And I saw NYC just came out with it and I tried it about a month ago. I love all NYC products can’t beat them for the price. But when it came to the mineral makeup it din’t work for me . It gave me coverage but it was to dry and flaky for my liking. I have normal skin but do tend to get redish around the cheekbones area. Yesterday I found your site and I been reading it for hours. And found this post about Milani , I went yesterday and bought the mineral powder foundation , came home and tried it , I wish I had taken a picture of before and after. The results were amazing. Great coverage and silky smooth application. I loved it I know is too early to tell the results in the long run ,but my first impression of it was a very pleasent one. I felt as if I was not wearing any make up at all. I did thought the brush was annoying . Again thanks for your site.
34 Jazmin // May 20, 2008 at 6:56 am
Hi Ecinay! You’re so welcome. And thank you so much for reading! I ‘m so glad you’re loving the site…and enjoying your new Milani makeup!! Please be sure to keep coming back and visiting any time you ‘d like and make sure to keep us updated on how this makeup works out for you ; )
And P.S. — I have to admit that NYC is one of those brands that I don’t cover as much as I should! I’ll definitely start paying better attention to it ; )

Hi!
I am one of those women who rarely, if ever, wears makeup. I always had huge problems with acne and was very active. I never could find a foundation that matched my skin tone. I always thought I looked fake or clowinsh depending on the makeup.
I’ve been wanting to try the mineral makeup for some time now, but I just can’t afford those expensive brands. That’s why I got so excited when I first heard about Milani Minerals. The price is definitely right, and the makeup is great! I don’t have to worry about break outs, it evens out my skin tone without having to apply so much of it that it looks pasted or caked onto my face, and it even has withstood one of my workouts better than I expected! I’m waiting to see how well it does when it’s 115 degrees here and when it gets to be humid here. I read elsewhere that women in the South don’t find it to hold its own in their humidity.
No matter if it doesn’t do well in the humidity. I don’t see me switching brands any time soon. Oh, and I also love their blushes and lip glosses! Everything is so natural looking yet flattering at the same time. I love it!!
Did I mention I love it??!!!!!

Hi -
Lately I have been curious about mineral makeup. I currently use a day moisture with spf 15, then a makeup primer, then I apply liquid foundation, and then a loose translucent power. My makeup does not feel caked on, however, now that I am in my early 40’s I am noticing that my makeup looks kind of dull. I am wondering if mineral makeup would be “fresher” for me to use. I am light skined. Any suggestions? Also, does mineral make include eyeshadows, etc.? Thanks for the help!
40 crystal // Aug 24, 2008 at 10:31 am
I was wondering if this mineral makeup would be good for people who have oily skin. I’ve currently have been using almay’s pure blend, but it’s expensive and has very little powder.
41 Queenie // Aug 28, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Pushing 60 w/ lots of trials and errors w. make-up. Minerals are the way to go for many reasons
Wish minerals were around when I was 16 plagued w/ very oily skin- still have combination skin. No break outs using minerals and I have just switched to Milani Minerals. Lol about brush comments.. hey for $8 buy a good set and be happy. If color isn’t perfect remember you can blend 2 shades to make the ‘perfect one ‘ for YOU On trips to Caribbean minerals held up to heat and humidity and was SO pleased with pictures at the end. I live in Midwest and minerals hold up to daily humidity .
do YOUSELF a favor TRY Milani Minerals.
42 nicole // Aug 29, 2008 at 7:29 am
I didn’t read through all the comments but i was curious if you had tried the pressed powder or only the loose powder of the Milani line. If so was it’s performance just as good as the loose powder? Was more/less coverage/application needed?
Thanks!
