Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Mineral Powder Foundation Review

Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Foundation

While Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Mineral Powder Foundation deserves a mention when reviewing drugstore mineral makekup, I don’t really have anything positive to say about the product.

Terrible Range of Shades. Neutrogena Mineral Sheers comes in a shamefully small range of shades (4, not including the shimmery bronzer).

Chalky Finish. More of a powder than a foundation, Mineral Sheers doesn’t offer skin perfecting coverage.

Even with only a light application, Mineral Sheers doesn’t leave skin with a glowing, natural finish. Furthermore, if you try to build any amount of coverage, this product makes the skin appear chalky and powdery looking.

Messy container. In my review of Almay Pure Blends Mineral Foundation, I complained about the lack of control you have over the product due to the fact that the product is automatically dispensed through the brush using a click-button mechanism.

Neutrogena Mineral Sheers is even worse. To use Mineral Sheers, you have to shake the container so that the powdered foundation will come out through the coarse and scratchy brush. Too much foundation usually comes through and you’re just left with a powdery mess.

Poor Value. Don’t let Neutrogena Mineral Sheers’ $12 price tag fool you into thinking that this product is anywhere near a good deal. When you do the math, Neutrogena Mineral Sheers foundation costs only $5 less than an equal amount of bareMinerals (Neutrogena retails for $12 for 0.18 ounces, which equals $20 for 0.3 ounces; bareMinerals costs $25 for 0.3 ounces).

That equals a bad product for a bad price.

I love Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Glow Sheers and Illuminating Microderm Cleansing Pads, but I have to give Neutrogena Mineral Sheers a thumbs down.

Has anyone tried Neutrogena Mineral Sheers Mineral Powder Foundation? What do you think of it?

I completely agree. I just did a write up on my product site(http://thedailyproduct.blogspot.com) about this foundation and I really wasn’t that impressed.

    I love your site!

this was the first make-up i used.
it caused me to break out. & it always
came off at the end of the day.

i did not like it at all.

    Hi Lee!

Ohh, that really sucks that your first experience with makeup was a bad one.

So did you end up finding something you liked?

The new Mineral Sheers in compact form works great for super oily skin like mine. But the sponge applicator that comes with it does not work to apply this makeup; just use a medium sized brush instead for good results.

Hi greybird! Thanks so much for sharing your opinion…and for the great tip! I totally agree with you (though the sponge can be nice for quick, on-the-go touch-ups ; )

I totally agree I think the product is awful. I thought I was doing something wrong, I can’t get anything to come out it’s the worst product I’ve ever used

lol, and my problem was that it was always way too much that came out!

At least with the new compact formula, Neutrogena took care of the container problem…but the foundation itself is only a little bit better.

I wish I would have read this blog earlier. I just bought Neutrogena Mineral Sheers today and I’m terribly disappointed. It should simply be a powder, as it has no foundation/coverage qualities whatsoever. I had to shake the heck out of it to even get product to come out. I hope I can return it even though it’s opened. Biggest waste of makeup money I’ve ever spent.

Oh, I wish you had found this blog earlier, too : )

Sorry to hear how disappointed you were with this product. I hope you can return it too! Good luck!

I disagree with these ratings. Neutrogena Mineral Sheers greatly diminished my breakouts and evened out my skintone. I really like it, and despite the fact that most of you claim you don’t get much for the price, this product lasted me over three months.

Neutrogene Mineral Sheers is the worst. I still cannot get the powder on to the brush by slapping it silly. Most of it goes in the air and the brush is rough…Shades not for me either but I bought it anyway.. Dumb me. It looked good in the package

    Hi all,
I’ve never tried this particular Neutrogena mineral product, but I did recently waste money on their mineral sheers liquid makeup, which I was sorely dissapointed in. It not only comes in a ridiculous sqeeuze tube/brush contraption, but is extremely watery and not at all blendable!

  • 14 Jazmin // Sep 9, 2008 at 8:42 am

Hi moxies! Thanks so much for sharing your opinions of this makeup!

Rebekah, was the liquid makeup that you tried in a squeeze tube or a bottle with a twist top? I actually tried it recently and I like it…though I’m still undecided over whether I like it more than Revlon Beyond Natural Skin Matching makeup (which I know you like : )

  • 15 Rebekah // Sep 19, 2008 at 7:30 pm

it was in a tube with a brush on the top!

  • 16 Jazmin // Sep 22, 2008 at 1:10 pm

Ok, just making sure it was the same one. I’ve actually been testing it and I like it so far. You’re right about it feeling sort of watery. It doesn’t have a lot of slip, but I think oily skin types will like it (and, if you haven’t tried it yet, wearing it over moisturizer can make it more blendable too : )

I just bought this product today, and it is terrible. I read the directions, and did what it said. All that came up was pencil-lead shaped things that doesn’t even look like foundation. So I thought there was something stuck in the bottom, so I unscrewed it all. It works the best if you take the brush and actually dip it in the bottle of foundation. Then I use a sponge to rub it in. So, I am never buying this again. I would reccomend Avon foundation. It’s the exact same, but it actually works the way it says it’s supposed to =-]

I’m not sure if this is a typo (I hope so) but otherwise your math doesn’t work out. –(Neutrogena retails for $12 for 1.8 ounces, which equals $20 for 0.3 ounces; bareMinerals costs $25 for .3 ounces).

  • 19 Jazmin // Nov 13, 2008 at 12:18 am

Briala, thank you for catching that! And, yes, that was definitely a typo. It’s supposed to read, “$12 for 0.18 oz” not “1.8 oz” (which would be a heck of a lot of mineral makeup!). I updated the post with the correction : )
