Okay, I’m not the “greenest” person in the world, but I do think that the eco-chic movement deserves attention and it’s something I’m interested in learning more about.
So in honor of Blog Action Day, I’ve dug up some environmentally friendly beauty tips for a more green beauty routine:
- Properly dispose of liquid cosmetics. Products such as suntan lotion can harm aquatic life if not disposed of properly. Before throwing away liquid beauty products, pour the liquid into cat litter, let the litter absorb the liquid, then toss the whole thing. (WOAI.com).
- Conserve water by limiting shower time or by reducing the water level in your bath by two inches. Also, be sure to turn the water off while brushing your teeth or washing your face. According to MSN.com, running the water in your bathroom sink for two minutes sends 2 gallons of water down the drain (I’m not totally convinced of that, but I don’t want to waste water testing it :)
- Speaking of saving water, try going “poo-free.” Reduce the use of plastic bottles and train your scalp to produce less oil by giving up shampoo and opting for more natural methods of cleaning your hair. “Poo-free” or “no poo” techniques include using baking soda, vinegar, or honey concotions and even washing hair with only water and a wash cloth.
- Choose cosmetics that come in biodegradable packaging. Some eco-chic choices include the Cargo Cosmetics PlantLove Line and the new Josie Maran Natural Cosmetics line.
- Reduce your carbon footprint. In addition to reducing the amount of energy you use, you can also offset the carbon emissions created by the energy that you do use. Take a lesson from Lancome and take advantage of the information and services offered by CarbonFund.org.
So what do you think, makeup moxies? Are these tips that you’d consider incorporating into your beauty routine? Do you have your own favorite “green” beauty tips to share? Feel free to weigh in!
