ThermaClear Acne Treatment Device

For the first time in my life, I’ve actually been looking forward to getting a pimple. I recently had the opportunity to try out the ThermaClear acne treatment device and I couldn’t wait to see whether this Star-Trekish contraption could actually live up to its zit-zapping promises.

What is ThermaClear? ThermaClear is a battery-powered, hand-held acne treatment device that works by delivering a short, highly concentrated dose of heat. This “thermal pulse” penetrates the skin to neutralize bacteria and help acne heal 2-4 times faster than acne that is left untreated.

Does ThermaClear Work? Yes, and it worked incredibly well to get rid of pimples quickly. While ThermaClear works best when applied at the earliest sign of a pimple, the device also delivered an outstanding performance when it came to battling a big, bad, stubborn zit.

ThermaClear Experiment #1: Yowch!
At the first sign of a surfacing pimple, I powered on my ThermaClear device, waited for the beep that signals that the device is ready, and then gently placed the illuminated blue tip on my pimple. I pressed the button and…yowch!

I felt a split-second sting that was more startling than painful and then, just as soon as it began, the whole two-second process was over.

That first zap was the worst simply because I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect. After that initial experience, however, the quick sting or “pinprick” sensation really isn’t a big deal. If you’re worried, try it out on your finger first. All you’ll feel is a quick burst of heat (just be sure to clean the tip off with alcohol before applying it your face).

I repeated this zit-zapping process two more times over the following two hours (you shouldn’t exceed three treatments per pimple during a 24-hour period). By the next day, the pimple had considerably diminished. The day after that, the pimple was gone.

Thermaclear Experiment #2: Monster Zit Meets Its Match
After my first experience with the ThermaClear device, I was impressed but not totally convinced. What if the first pimple that I had treated with the device was just a short-lived blemish that was never even destined for bona fide zitdom?

I’ve since tested ThermaClear on considerably bigger pimples — including one of those angry, concealer-resistant-, widowmaker-type zits that easily could have lasted over a week. After faithfully zapping it every few hours, the zit-from-hell completely disappeared after about four days.

The bottomline on ThermaClear: If you worry about acne, ThermaClear is $150 well spent. Just make sure to read all the directions and warnings that come with the device. While I personally didn’t have any problems with it, you could potentially experience redness or flaking. You could even end up burning yourself if you don’t follow the directions and end up using the device excessively.

I really would have loved to have this gadget in high school when I battled breakouts regularly. Nevertheless, as an adult, I still love having this device around. It’s like having insurance against those ill-timed, party-crashing pimples that pop up right before an important occasion. I highly recommend it.

ThermaClear is available for $150 from Sephora.com.

Has anyone else tried ThermaClear? What do you think of it?

    Hi Jazmin!

Thanks for the review! I’ve had my eye on a zit-zapping device for some time now (almost bought the Zeno), and it’s great to know that someone has actually tried out one of these things. And better yet–it’s good to know that it’s worth the hefty $150 price tag.

  • 2 Jazmin // Oct 17, 2007 at 9:43 pm

Hi Trish! You’re so welcome! A few of our fellow makeup moxies have mentioned that they’re not sure that they’d pay this much for a “zit-zapper”.

While I’d love to see the price of this device come down, I have to admit that I’ve suffered from enough anxiety-causing acne that this is a price I’d be willing to pay given the device’s effective results.

If you try out ThermaClear, please be sure to let us all know how it works out for you!

I love your blog!! and i’ve bought a lot of stuff just b/c you recommended it and i haven’t been disappointed yet! i think i will definitely give Thermaclear a try. Can you buy them in Sephora or only online? Thanks!

  • 4 Jazmin // Oct 18, 2007 at 9:14 am

Hi Jaime! Thanks for stopping by! I’m so glad that I could help you find products that you’re happy with.

Currently, my nearby Sephoras aren’t carrying ThermaClear in store. However, you can always try calling your local Sephora to see if it’s in stock.

If not, you can buy ThermaClear online from either Sephora or the ThermaClear website (see the links above)…and both will give you free shipping :)

    Good luck!

  • 5 Trish // Oct 18, 2007 at 3:24 pm

I will definitely buy the Thermaclear. I love this blog too. Like Jaime, most of the new stuff I buy is because of your rec, Jazmin. I even buy stuff that I normally wouldn’t be interested in (i.e. Perfume Pens!! :))

  • 6 Jazmin // Oct 19, 2007 at 2:36 pm

LOL, Trish, glad you liked the perfume pens…and it means so much to me that you love this blog!!

While you know that I love to discover and test out new beauty products, you should also know that my absolute fave part of my job is getting all the comments, questions, and feedback from my fellow makeup moxies ;)

So thank you moxies for the comments! Keep em’ comin’!

    Hi Jazmin!

I love your blogs and normally you are right on regarding a product. But I have to say I would recommend ZENO over ThermaClear anyday!

There might be more cost for Zeno, but it’s more efficient and changing out the tips (which is an added cost) only helps maintain your product by regulating temperature more effectively. Which mean bye bye pesky zit!

No laser used only heat that kills the bacteria that accounts for 90% of acne. Check out this article I read from USA today:

Hi Stacy, thanks so much for sharing your opinion! Have you actually tried both Zeno and ThermaClear?

I’ve heard some good things about Zeno, but since I’ve never tried it, I can’t vouch for it’s effectiveness or compare it with ThermaClear (which I can say worked great for me :)

The link you provided isn’t working, but I think the article that you’re referring to is this one: The Heat is On New Acne Fighters. Please let me know if that’s the right one.

The ThermaClear device doesn’t actually use a laser. As the article points out, ThermaClear, like Zeno, fights acne by delivering a controlled dose of heat (though at a higher temperature that’s applied for a shorter period of time).

Also Like Zeno, ThermaClear similarly requires replacement tips.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts and the link!

A week after I started using the ThermaClear, I developed rosacea. This may have been completely coincidental, but I am concerned that the ThermaClear’s intense heat bursts were a trigger. Curious whether anyone else has experienced something similar, I have started a blog:
    http://community.livejournal.com/zitzappers

  • 10 Jazmin // Dec 3, 2007 at 1:23 pm

Hi Emily! Thanks so much for your comment.

I’m sorry to hear that you’re having skin problems. As you pointed out, it may have been coincidental, but there’s really no way to tell unless you get the advice of a physician.

Best of luck to you and thanks again for stopping by!

  • 11 stacy // Dec 5, 2007 at 9:26 am

I have used both. My friend had a TC and I tried hers before I purchased my Zeno. It was quite a bit more painful, I think this is because in order to have a shorter treatment time they use a higher heat. Anyways, I received my Zeno as a gift and it definitely wasn’t as painful and it actually worked better compared to TC.

  • 12 stacy // Dec 5, 2007 at 9:29 am

sorry to be confusing, I must have been thinking purchase when typing (meant received)…I did not buy my zeno it was given to me as a gift.

  • 13 Jazmin // Dec 5, 2007 at 10:08 am

    Hi Stacy!

Thank you for leaving a comment and sharing your experiences with these two products!

You said that Zeno treatments were less painful, but would you mind sharing more details on why you like Zeno better or think it’s more effective than ThermaClear?

  • 14 Trish // Dec 7, 2007 at 8:29 pm

I recently purchased the Thermoclear, and it is the best $112.50 (thanks to that generous Moxie discount!) that I’ve ever spent! I wish I had this little beauty during the last month before my wedding. My pimples are gone within twenty-four hours (at the most) of treatment . And when I say gone, I mean GONE—like they were never there. Yes, sometimes the zap is a bit painful depending on the area you’re treating, but I will gladly endure two seconds of pain to avoid a big red nasty zit that will take at least a week to get rid of and that leaves a mark even without squeezing. A huge thumbs-up for TC! :)

  • 15 Jazmin // Dec 8, 2007 at 11:29 am

Hi Trish! Thanks so much for sharing your experience!

I’m so glad you found something that works for you!!

  • 16 Sabrina // Dec 18, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Where did you find the Moxie discount for the TC acne device?

  • 17 Jazmin // Dec 18, 2007 at 10:08 pm

    Hi Sabrina,

Thanks for the question! ThermaClear offered the limited-time discount especially for Makeup Moxie readers.

  • 18 Jann // Dec 20, 2007 at 9:03 am

My son wants a TC but I am not sure it will work for him. He has a lot of acne, clusters of them. We have tried everything including antibiotics and nothing works.
I would appreciate some feedback on this concern.
    Thank you
    Jann

  • 19 Jazmin // Dec 20, 2007 at 3:42 pm

    Hi Jann,

Thank you so much for visiting and leaving a comment!

I’m sorry to hear that your son is having trouble finding an acne solution that works for him.

While I can’t give any sort of medical advice, I can try to point you to some resources that might help. The single most important thing you can do is consult with a licensed physician or dermatologist.

A medical doctor will be able to properly identify the type of acne that your son has and can prescribe medicine or recommend the best methods for treating it . He or she can also give you a qualified opinion on whether a device like TC will work for your son.

Since TC is intended for use on “mild to moderate acne”, the company’s website offers information and photos that can help you decide whether the device would be an appropriate treatment for your son to try out.

I struggled with acne as a teenager, so I can definitely sympathize. I really hope this information helps and that your son can find something that works for him.

Good luck, please feel free to drop me an email at jazmin@makeupmoxie.com or leave a comment and let me know how it goes!

  • 20 sara // Jan 19, 2008 at 10:45 pm

after reading your review as well as other reviews from other beauty sites i gave it a try. i’m not going to lie – it is not a miracle worker but it is a great complement to my skincare regimen – and i have found that, as the website suggested, it is most effective when used at the first sign of a pimple. :) and love how it doesn’t dry my skin out. ps – to everyone who is afraid of the sting/pain, it does not hurt or sting that much.

  • 21 Jazmin // Jan 21, 2008 at 9:14 am

    Hi Sara,

Thank you so much for reading…and for sharing your opinion on this product! I’m sure your comment will help any of our fellow Makeup Moxies who may be considering buying a ThermaClear.

And I definitely agree…the newer the pimple, the better this device will work!

  • 22 Sandy // Jan 29, 2008 at 7:23 pm

TC and Zeno both sound great. I am wondering how it works on black skin. I have problems with hyperpigmentation…yes a dark mark occurs with every pimple :( I was wondering if the heat would leave a mark on my face.

And is there a money back guarentee if your not satisfied with the product? If so it is definitely worth a try!

  • 23 Jen // Jan 31, 2008 at 5:58 pm

    Hi,
As I was researching the TC I have noticed that the above “Emily” and “Stacy” seem to have posted exactly the same posts on every single place there is an article about the TC. I think that is pretty shady and disengenuous to the rest of us trying to actually find out information on it.

  • 24 Jazmin // Jan 31, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Hi Sandy! Thanks for the comment! Unfortunately, I don’t know whether there are any particular side effects when TC is used on black skin that’s prone to hyperpigmentation (so if any fellow makeup moxies have any input on this, please share it!).

If you’re worried about it, it’s always best to consult with your doctor and get his or her professional opinion.

Having said that, the materials that came with my TC only mention that the device can potentially cause temporary redness.

And yes! If you buy TC from the company’s website, they have a 30-day money back guarantee. If you buy it from Sephora, you get 60 days.

If you end up trying it out, please let us know how it goes!

Jen: What a curious observation! Thank you for the comment. Either Emily and Stacy feel strongly enough that they wanted to leave their messages on every blog that reviewed this product…or they’ve perhaps failed to disclose some kind of affiliation with another company.

I would never want to unfairly accuse a visitor to this site of the latter. If that’s the case, however, it’s disappointing and it does a major disservice to the real makeup moxies who visit this blog looking for a variety of honest opinions.

I welcome them to respond to your comment and, as always, I encourage respectful discussion here at Makeup Moxie. : )

  • 25 Michelle // Feb 23, 2008 at 7:58 am

I just ordered TC yesterday thanks to the feedback on your blog. I’m 35 and have been an acne sufferer since I was 15. I can’t wait to try out TC. I will be back to post my findings.

  • 26 Jazmin // Feb 25, 2008 at 8:46 am

Hi Michelle! I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of TC…I hope you love it and that it works for you : )

  • 27 Joanne // Mar 10, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Hi Jazmin! Thanks for the link above (The Heat is On New Acne Fighters). It was really interesting. I would highly encourage others to check it out too. I didn’t know the temp of TC got as high as 212 degrees. Like a kitchen oven, that’s a pretty serious temperature to put on your face, even for 2 seconds! In response to Emily’s post above regarding rosacea, I experienced red, patchy and flaking skin in the area I used the TC on my face. It didn’t go away for almost a week and neither did the pimple. My skin is considered normal, but I guess TC is too intense for me. That’s ok, because it really hurt immensely too. I’m not into intense pain, even for beauty, unless it is necessary for my health!

  • 28 Jazmin // Mar 10, 2008 at 4:06 pm

    Hi Joanne! You’re welcome!

The good thing about TC and Zeno is that, even though they deliver a high dose of heat, they can be used safely (when used correctly)…and the treatment really is not comparable to sticking your face on a kitchen oven (which, obviously, is never advisable lol).

It’s too bad that this product didn’t work out for you, but thanks so much for sharing your experience with it!

  • 29 LG // Mar 14, 2008 at 6:26 am

I know it’s been a while for posting here but this is the site I found when researching and it sparked me to order Thermaclear. I’ve been plagued by bad skin my whole life and now I am 48 and still get that occasional headlight zit. Well, it arrived and just in time because one, rather large bump was starting on my chin. I used TC that evening as directed. When I woke up next day, the zit was less than 1/2 the size. I used it next day too and by the 3rd day, it was virtually gone. For me, this thing is a miracle. I have used antibiotics, creams and even was on a regimen of accutane. With all that, still get a zit here and there. My zits usually grow to mega-zits and are painful. Never would I get one that goes away by itself and the creams never do anything but make a flaky, dry zit since they are under the surface.

For everyone out there who is frustrated and tired of living with zits, I would highly recommend this device. It’s quick/easy to use, portable, and for ONCE (at least for me)…it seriously works as it claims to work.

  • 30 Jazmin // Mar 14, 2008 at 11:57 am

Wow, that is so awesome! Thanks so much for reading and for sharing your opinion on this product ; )

And congrats on winning your war against “mega-zits”! ; )

  • 31 Punk Buster // Mar 18, 2008 at 7:31 pm

    Jazmin,

I tried posting before but it didn’t work. This is my second attempt.

I have read reviews and ratings from makeup websites and blogs regarding the Thermaclear acne device due to my chronic acne.

I have noticed an author who has been spamming the same comments in support of Zeno on a multitude of websites- verbatim- probably due to an affiliation with Zeno. The author, “stacy,” has been posting under different pseudonyms.

As a sufferer of acne who has spent thousands of dollars on treatments, I find this person’s actions unethical. I will be more than happy to provide you with the other links. However, do what you will, I’m just making you aware of it.

  • 32 Jazmin // Mar 18, 2008 at 11:23 pm

    Hi Punk Buster,

Thanks for your comment…and please excuse the delay in getting it published. It got trapped in my spam filter (which, unfortunately, happens regularly).

Jen commented above and alerted me to these repeated comments from “stacy” and “emily” and I’ve given them a chance to respond

Please know that I really loathe comment spam and we try very hard to keep it off of this blog. As I’m sure you can understand, however, it can be very difficult to weed out all spam comments…especially those that appear legitimate.

Furthermore, I think there are some people who are genuinely enthusiastic enough about a product to leave their opinion of it all over the place.

If I had proof that these comments originated from Zeno or some kind of “pay for comments” company, I’d certainly take it up with that company directly as well as remove any fake comments.

If you’d like to send me any additional information or have other concerns about this, please feel free to email me at editor@makeupmoxie.com.

  • 33 Joanne // Apr 20, 2008 at 2:40 pm

Hi again Jazmin! I am resending my April 3, 2008 comment. For some reason, it never posted. Thanks! Here it is again:

Hi Jazmin! Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve written back to you. I just got over the flu!

Anyways, since I last talked to you, I told my dr. about my reaction to TC. His advice was not to use TC because skin burns at about 130 F and TC is hotter than that. (I might try the other product mentioned in your blog though because it is under 130 F—if I do, I’ll write back to you) But, I’m so thankful for your blog. It gives me a place to tell others about my experiences and vent. Thanks for letting me share.

  • 34 Jazmin // Apr 21, 2008 at 11:24 am

Hi there, Joanne! For some reason, your comment landed in my spam filter…but luckily I spotted this last one and fished it out! Sorry about that!

Thanks for sharing your experience with TC and you should certainly listen to your doctor, especially if you’ve experienced adverse reactions to the TC treatments in the past!

And it’s really unfortunate that you’re skin had that kind of reaction after using TC. I’ve used my TC a number of times since I wrote the review above and, fortunately, I still haven’t had any problems with it.

Anyway, take care of that skin! And I hope you’re over your flu!!

  • 35 Angela // Apr 22, 2008 at 5:26 pm

    Hello,
I had acne problem when I was a teenager. Then, it disappeared when I became 20′s. Due to much stress, I started to break out really bad around three years ago.
I found Zeno and tried it. It worked so well!!!! I loved it!! But since you need to buy replacement, it is quite expensive. Then I wanted to read what people say about Zeno and I found TC. I read most of comments here but I am still not sure which one works better. Could you please let me know which one works better or is it same?
And for TC, how long the battery last?
    Thanks

  • 36 Jazmin // Apr 23, 2008 at 7:50 am

Hi Angela, thanks for your questions!

I haven’t tried Zeno, so I can’t compare the two. However, Gear Diary has a great review that compares the two devices.

In her review, Gear Diary prefers TC over Zeno and says, “ThermaClear manages to accomplish the same thing that the Zeno does for less money, less hassle, and in less time.”

In terms of battery use, it seems like they’ll last a pretty long time. I’ve probably used the device about 30 times and I still haven’t changed the batteries (though I do remove them when I store my TC between pimple battles ; )

Hope that helps. If you end up trying out TC, I would love to hear how you think it compares to Zeno!

  • 37 Yvonne // Apr 23, 2008 at 8:50 am

I am looking at both TC and Zeno before I buy for my 14 year old son. He really doesn’t have problems with “white heads” but with “black heads” What do any of you who have tried either think of it when using it on black heads?? Thanks in advance for your input:-)

  • 38 Jazmin // Apr 23, 2008 at 10:27 am

    Hi Yvonne,

Unfortunately, TC isn’t meant for use on blackheads.

Instead, it’s intended for use on mild to moderate acne (raised, red pimples). If you’d like to learn more about TC, the device’s user manual is a helpful resource.

As for treating blackheads, there are a few things that your son can try to help clear them up. He can try a product that contains salicylic acid. Try to find products that contain a concentration of 1%-2%. A good one to try is Clearasil’s Daily Blackhead Control Pads.

If his blackheads are more stubborn, he can also try microdermabrasion (either professional or one of the “at home” kits like the one from Neutrogena).

If those still don’t work, you should see what a dermatologist has to say (he/she may recommend a prescription strength treatment like Retin-A).

    Hope that helps!

  • 39 Sara // May 3, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Thanks for the review! I have been doing a lot of research on this product. I am pregnant and my skin has become unattractive! In my previous pregnancy I had that “glow”, but not so lucky the third time around! Can’t wait to puchase the TC.

  • 40 Jazmin // May 13, 2008 at 11:39 pm

You’re welcome! Congrats on the baby! But sorry to hear that you’re having some skin problems…hope the TC works out for you. If you end up trying it out, please be sure to stop back and let us know what you think of it!

Hey Everyone. after reading the review on thermaclear here i have been reading what others have to say elsewhere. i want to try it out but dont want to keep wasting my money on things that dont work. anyways, i just found a coupon code to use for ten dollars off. the code is TENOFF.

  • 42 Christina // May 14, 2008 at 1:50 pm

so i’ve been reading up on zeno for about a week and it all started with an ad i heard on the radio about 3 weeks ago. i just happen to stumble across blogs and comments about thermaclear and was convinced right away that it was the one for me. after visiting thermaclear.com i didnt think about it anymore and went for it. it is the priciest thing i’ve ever bought for myself beauty wise and well i hope it works.

i’ve read that its best used on those gynormous zits and thats exactly what i suffer from. pain for me has never been an issue but if thats the case for thermaclear ill just remember my my mother says, “all in the name of beauty.”

well reading this blog makes me feel better in that im not alone with acne problems. i will definately be back to give an update. ^_^

  • 43 Kelli // Jun 19, 2008 at 10:11 pm

OK, I just got mine today. I am super confused. I don’t know if it didn’t come with a lid or I just can’t figure out how to take the lid off. When I pull like it says the entire blue cap comes off. When I use it, it’s not near as painful as people make it sound. Am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks,
    Kelli

  • 44 Kay // Jun 23, 2008 at 8:35 am

    Hi,

I am about to purchase the thermaclear on sephora but I couldnt decide between zeno and thermaclear. My acne is hormonal. If I take ortho tri cyclen , my skin starts clearing up although my skin is never baby soft :( I see other girls with such nice soft smooth skin and I wonder why not me? anyhow, even with taking the pill, I do break out on cheeks and forehead. I get these tiny little bumps all over my forehead which I wonder thermaclear will be able to treat and i get big pimplea here and there on my cheek. It’s very frustrating. I guess I will buy Thermaclear although the thought of pain is making me nervous. but I am willing to do anything to have smooth skin. Also wondering if it is suitable to use if you’re pregnant. Not that I am, but I am going to stop the pill and maybe try getting pregnant in the next few months.

  • 45 phxhoney // Jun 23, 2008 at 8:54 pm

My experience with Thermaclear- It works! -for certain types of pimples (red painful). I have been using TC for about 2 months. My face has been clear since using TC. It is worth the money. It does hurt. I find that using it immediately upon feeling a break out beginning, it works the best. Literally, within hours the blemishes will be gone.

  • 46 sandy // Jun 29, 2008 at 9:47 am

My experience with thermaclear is that its high heat burned my face plus the pimple did not go away any faster. I even followed the instructions as written too on both settings. This was a big expensive mistake for me. It really hurts too. I’m totally disappointed!

  • 47 Carlie // Jul 18, 2008 at 5:22 pm

i heard it can leave holes in your skin!

  • 48 Jane // Dec 21, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Is the discount still available for Moxie readers? If so, how do I get this as I am interested in buying the product? Also, how long do the batteries last? I am a little put off that it is charged by batteries rather than power like the Zeno and am surprised that this has not been more of a point in the reviews? I am wondering whether the heat is less when the batteries are running out and is there any indicator on the device to say when to change the batteries?
