Makeup Moxie’s Top Ten Best Beauty Products of 2007

Sukicolor Pure Cream Stain for Lips and Cheeks

Though there were a lot of products that launched in 2007 that I liked (and disliked), there are only a few that I find myself reaching for again and again.

It’s these “repeat” stars that I’ve listed below as my favorites of the year.

In no particular order (because I truly love ‘em all), here are my Top Ten Best Beauty Products of 2007:

  1. MAC Tendertone Lip Balm. This super-smooth pot lipgloss leaves lips soft, subtly tinted, and protected with SPF 12. Highly addictive, the only thing wrong with these silky balms is that they’re limited edition ($14.50, maccosmetics.com).
  2. Sukicolor Pure Cream Stain. Though it multi-tasks as an effective lipstick and lipstain, this tinted mineral cream is an excellent cream blush ($36.50, sukicolor.com).
  3. TRESemme Curl Activator Spray. One of the fastest and easiest ways to get tousled, beachy waves…no blowdryer required ($4.79, Walgreens).
  4. And when I don’t have to time to wash my hair, I’m all about Ojon Rub Out Dry Cleanser. With its ability to absorb grease and add volume and texture, I said goodbye to bad hair days when I found this beautifully scented dry shampoo ($24, Sephora).
  5. ThermaClear Acne Treatment Device. I wish I had this outstanding “zit-zapper” contraption when I had stubborn teen acne. But don’t get me wrong, I love having this device around to banish, or at least accelerate the healing of the occasional surprise pimple ($150, Sephora).
  6. Tarte Sunburst Beaded Bronzing Lotion. This light moisturizer is perfect for creating an ultra-natural-looking, dewy glow ($28, Sephora).
  7. For a longer-lasting boost of bronze color, Nivea Visage Sun-Kissed Self-Tanner combines a light facial moisturizer with an effective, gradual facial self-tanner that delivers a superb, non-orangey tan ($7, Drugstore.com) and SPF 4 sun protection.
  8. Neutrogena Illuminating Microderm Cleansing Pads. Effective, yet gentle, these cleansing pads leave your skin feeling smooth and refined (plus they’re great for travel ;) Available for $8 from Drugstore.com.
  9. Milani Mineral Makeup. Truly a drugstore superstar, this mineral foundation ranked #1 in my reviews and rankings of the best drugstore mineral makeup ($8, Walgreens).
  10. Too Faced Lash Injection. With its ability to add great volume to lashes with minimal clumping, smudging, or uncurling, this is one of the best non-waterproof mascaras on the market ($19.50, Sephora).

So do you agree with my picks, Makeup Moxies? What are some of your favorite beauty products of the year?

  • 2 Jazmin // Jan 4, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Hi Jaime! It’s always nice to see you here! And thanks for bringing up MAC Paint Pots…their silky color and long wear definitely make them one of the best makeup products of 2007 ;)

  • 3 Rubii // Jan 4, 2008 at 8:23 pm

    i also love Milani eyeshadows!

  • 4 Nancy // Jan 6, 2008 at 1:50 pm

I would love to join your site, but am really green about all of this yet, still learning. Sorry. I am so interested in the new Calvin Klein Beauty coming out and when it will be for sale, and where. I have atually called Macy’s to find out if they had it for sale yet and they said no so far but soon, I guess. Have you heard yet? I do want to join your group though. Please let me know though, OK. Nancy

  • 5 Jazmin // Jan 7, 2008 at 9:27 am

Hi Rubii! Thank you for the comment and, yes, I agree! Milani eyeshadows are great…silky, vibrant, and affordable. Love ‘em!

And hi Nancy! Welcome to Makeup Moxie’s Beauty Blog! While I’ll eventually have a place for all of you lovely Makeup Moxies to register on the site, all you have to do to “join” is to simply do what you’re already doing!

As for Calvin Klein Beauty, I haven’t heard much, but I did find this link on Fashion Wire Daily. It says that, so far, CK Beauty has only been in available in select Macy’s and Dillard’s, but we should be able to buy it very soon from Sephora :)

If I find out more, I’ll be sure to let you know!

    Thanks again for the question!

Here are my favs from 2007:

    - Au Courant Platinum Self Tanning Mousse

    - Lancome’s Powder Eyebrow Pencil

    - Physician’s Formula Mineral Powder Blush

    - Lip Fusion

  • 7 Jazmin // Jan 11, 2008 at 7:07 am

    Hi KISSkitten,

Thanks so much for sharing your faves from 2007.

I haven’t tried the Au Courant tanning mousse…but now you’ve got me interested! I’ll have to check it out ;)

And out of all the lip plumpers I’ve tried (which is probably almost all of them), LipFusion’s still the best!

    Great picks!

hey jazmin .. just wondering if you’ve ever done a blog on drugstore superstars?

and do you know anything about nyx cosmetics? or E.R.A. airbrush foundation?

  • 9 jb2 // Apr 17, 2008 at 2:31 pm

oh and also .. have you heard of the american beauty mineral makeup that uses ashley judd as their spokesperson? lol. sorry to be so annoying .. i’m always clicking the submit button too quickly. thanks so much for being so sweet and answering my questions.

i don’t really keep track of when beauty products come out, but here are my favorites:

waterproof lineworks liquid liner – maybelline

    prime time – bare minerals

pantene restoratives time renewal conditioner and shampoo

baked eye shadows – physician’s formula

and i just saw your link for predictions in 08 .. kim kardashian? i am probably one of the view who adores her. lol. i think she’s beautiful and breaking the mold with her curves.

  • 10 Jazmin // Apr 18, 2008 at 8:00 am

Hi jb2, nice to see you again! lol, and you’re not being annoying! I love getting your comments and questions and I’m always happy to chat ; )

A blog post on drugstore superstars: Nope, I haven’t done a “round-up” type post, yet, if that’s what you’re asking. I was actually considering a whole separate category specifically for my drugstore superstars. Do you think that would be helpful?

NYX Cosmetics: I’ve only tried their eyeshadows and while I love their vibrant, fashion-forward shades, I was disappointed with how quickly they wore off. But I’m yet to test them with a primer ;)

ERA airbrush foundation: Haven’t tried it yet.

Ashley Judd’s American Beauty mineral makeup: Wow, it wasn’t even on my radar! Thanks for bringing it up. I’ll have to try it out!

And thanks for sharing your faves!! I think I’m going to give that Maybelline liner another chance. The first time I tried it, I found that it flaked off and I wasn’t wild about its shiny finish (and it’s been in my bathroom drawer ever since, lol).

And I agree with you about Kim K…I really do think she’s beautiful. But the reason I chose her as my celebrity beauty pick for ’08 was because I think she’s still on her way up and even the people who say they hate her and that they’re tired of her are still paying attention to her.

  • 11 jb2 // Apr 19, 2008 at 10:33 am

lol. i was on yahoo answers and a lady says she swears by that mineral makeup. i think the price could be better … but they did a good job choosing ashley judd as their promoter. she is flawless.

and i’m sorry about the maybelline liner! it’s one of the first liquid liners that i’ve tried that has stayed on all day on my nasty oily skin .. lol. i think i was just excited and didn’t pay attention to the shininess of it.

and about kim k .. it makes me sad that people call her degrading names when she just made a mistake. people practically celebrate when it comes to men and tapes like that … but with women it’s a whole different thing. the double standard shouldn’t shock me (since it’s been around) forever, but it still does.

and i heard you live in LV! i luv LV. lol. do you live on the strip or–? how exciting either way. i’m from cali and every time i get to visit it’s such an experience =)

  • 12 Teresa // Apr 19, 2008 at 10:04 pm

    On a budget, my favs(criteria: long lasting ) :
Eyeshadows: Jane pots, Milani pots…color stays true and lasts on my oily lids
Lipcolor: jane lipstick Ultra Moist Lipwear, Revlon Super Lustrious lip gloss…both long lasting
Mascara: CoverGirl Fantastic Lash wtrprf…I have short asian lashes, this makes them look…battable
Eyeliner: My #1 find of 2007, Styli-Style semim permanent 24 hr liner for my asian eyelids. Stays as long as wtrprf liquid liner but smudgeable.
Foundation: Sheer cover, excellent at kit prices
    Stick Concealer: NYC
    Bronzer: WetnWild
    Blush: Mark (Avon)
    Face sunless tanner: Neutrogena
A beautiful pearly smile: any cheap spinbrush, and a whitening toothpaste

  • 13 Jazmin // Apr 21, 2008 at 12:19 pm

jb2: Don’t be sorry about the Maybelline liner! You’re not the only one that I’ve heard from lately who really likes it!

Ugh, and I agree with you about the double standard…it’s just so frustrating that we haven’t cracked through it yet.

lol, yep I live in Sin City! (though I’m almost always traveling, so I don’t get to be home as much as I’d like to be : ) And, no, I don’t live on the Strip (but I live about 15 min. away) and, maybe surprisingly, I don’t really go to the Strip that often anymore! I think that, once you’ve lived here for awhile, the novelty of the Strip wears off and you end up spending most of your time in your neighborhood…which is really similar to living in other American cities (except for the slot machines in the grocery store, lol ; )

What are your fave places to visit when you’re in Vegas?

  • 14 Jazmin // Apr 21, 2008 at 12:21 pm

Teresa: I LOVE the budget faves! Thanks so much for sharing them. I’m adding a bunch of them to my list of “things to try”….particularly that Styli-Style liner ; )

  • 15 jb2 // Apr 22, 2008 at 6:07 pm

oh man, unfortunately i have only really been to the strip in vegas =( i haven’t gotten to see the real neighborhoods or anything like that. my parents love to gamble away their money when they have something extra. if only they knew how to count cards! lol.

but my favorite places in vegas have to be caesars palace and mandalay bay for the burger bar=) MGM grand is pretty chill, too.

what’s your favorite place you’ve traveled to?

  • 16 Jazmin // Apr 23, 2008 at 8:33 am

LOL, I’ve heard that counting cards is difficult and risky (it’s not illegal, but I guess casino security is pretty good at figuring out if you’re doing it), but I remember watching a show about card counters who’ve made millions doing it!

And, really, pretty much everything you’d possibly want to see in LV is on the Strip…the suburbs are pretty much the same as in CA : )

I love all the casinos you mentioned…and the Burger Bar (yum!!). My all-time fave is probably Bellagio (great restaurants, nice atmosphere, and a Sephora cross the street ; )

I’ve always really loved the Mirage too…it’s more old school and chill (kinda like MGM) and I like all of the fresh tropical flowers and plants in there.

As for my favorite place that I’ve traveled to…that’s tough! I’d probably have to say that my favorite is Rome. It’s the only city in the world that I’ve been to that made me seriously consider moving away from the U.S., lol.

With all of its history, culture, shopping, great food, and nice people, it seems like there’s never enough time to do everything you want to do when you visit that city.

Do you have a fave place you like to visit? (besides Vegas, of course ; )

  • 17 jb2 // Apr 25, 2008 at 10:57 pm

funny, i really like the mirage too. their lion and dolphin exhibit was fun to see. but me and my family were quick to leave because it was during the summer time and the heat was killin us. lol. the dolphins were so adorable.

it’s sad to say, but i don’t really travel unless it’s by car ..i’m a starving college student. lol. i mainly travel around southern cali because i don’t like being in the car for too long. rome sounds amazing. i’ve always had a thing for italy ..i think it’s because they cook their pasta so good it makes me think their whole country would be just as fabulous.

can’t wait till your next review, tip, blog or anything beauty related. i think you’re a genius =]

  • 18 Jazmin // Apr 28, 2008 at 10:27 am

I love those dolphins, too! And of course the white tigers, too (even though I’m a little freaked out about them since the whole thing with Roy).

lol, I understand the starving student thing…though there are certainly worse places to be hanging around than socal ; ) Have you decided on a major yet? And does your college have any foreign exchange programs? College is such a great time to travel…it will cost some extra money, but it’s still way cheaper than if you wait until after you graduate.

And, jb, you are just the sweetest!! I definitely don’t think I’m a genius…but I’d like to think that I do a pretty good job at getting the information I need from dermatologists, cosmetic formulators/brand creators, and makeup artists — who are the real geniuses in the beauty world : )

Not to mention all of you makeup moxies who comment on this blog!! I’m constantly learning new things from you guys : )

  • 19 jb2 // Apr 28, 2008 at 1:47 pm

LOL .. i had a bad experience with a derm … so i don’t like to give them props, but i’m sure they’re a lot of great ones out there … i just feel like a lot of them were born with great skin, so they don’t understand the mentality of having bad skin and how it can affect you deep inside. i feel like i’m seconds away from a mariah carey song. love her, too. lol.

i was reading one of your other mineral makeup reviews, and i was wondering how you take care of your face brushes…i’m a little hesitant on buying a new kabuki, even though i really need one because i’m not sure how to take care of them properly. lol.

    thanks again!!

  • 20 Jazmin // Apr 28, 2008 at 7:07 pm

You’re so welcome, jb! LOL! I like Mariah Carey too. And that sucks that you had a bad experience with a skin doc…I’ve met some incredible ones who are really sympathetic to their patients and then I’ve certainly met some who’ve forgotten (or perhaps have never really understood) that skin issues can be emotional and deeply tied to one’s self-esteem (ok, I may be moving into Mariah territory now too, lol)

As for the makeup brushes, ideally you should be washing them every 2-3 weeks (which I of course don’t do as religiously as I’d like…or should : )

There are a couple ways you can clean them. I think the best is to wet the brush with warm water and work a small amount of baby shampoo through the bristles by “squeezing” it through the brush. Then, rinse the brush under running water until the water runs totally clear.

Once you’ve rinsed all the soap out of it, shake out your brush to get rid of the excess water, smooth the brush back into its original shape, and then lay it flat on a clean towel or paper towel to dry.

Then there’s the “lazy” method. You can use facial cleansing cloths (the no-rinse kind) or even fragrance-free baby wipes to clean off your brushes. It doesn’t get your brushes as clean as the baby-shampoo-method, but it’s still better than nothing ; )

thank you so much! you’re so helpful ;)

  • 22 Jazmin // May 13, 2008 at 10:38 pm

    jb, you’re so welcome, babe!

  • 23 WSosa // Aug 8, 2008 at 2:58 pm

    Hi, I have a question,

What’s your opinion about Sephora Brand Products and Mineral Makeup From Ulta?

  • 24 Jazmin // Aug 9, 2008 at 8:11 pm

    Hi there,

Thanks for your question! I’ve only tried the Ulta mineral makeup a few times and my general impression of it is that it works well, but may not really be worth it for the price (I have to test it more, though : )

As for the Sephora Brand products, I don’t have much of an opinion of them because I’ve only tried two of its products. The first was a sample of one of the lipglosses, which I didn’t like. But then I tried one of the lip balms from its summer Safari collection, which I really did like ; )

  • 25 WSosa // Aug 12, 2008 at 12:52 pm

    Ok, thank you very much!

  • 26 Jazmin // Aug 13, 2008 at 5:53 am

    You’re welcome! : )
